From the Hemingway House we headed around the area to see what else we could find. We probably drove up and down nearly every street, but this first walk was our chance to see quite a bit.
The pink and Maxi taxis were always a source of amusement. I wish I had taken the picture, but a regular old yellow cab seemed completely out of place - almost too conservative and definitely not pastel enough!
We walked past a house that advertised it was the oldest in Key West. My response? Good to know.
I don't remember where this was, but we peeked inside and saw Bobby J as Elvis and it seemed worthy of a quick photo.
Didn't buy, but we were amused.
Inside Capt. Tony's, where Sloppy Joe's used to be. Sloppy Joe's was a favorite hangout of Ernest Hemingway. When the rent was raised, the owner of Sloppy Joe's decided to move and took EVERYTHING. He even yanked out the urinals. I apparently didn't take a picture of it, but Ernest was walking past as everything was being tossed out of the building, saw a urinal and said he pissed away enough money there that he deserved a keepsake as well. He brought the urinal home and left it next to the very expensive pool. Pauline was pretty upset, but Ernest said he'd move it when she moved the pool (I think it was the pool, anyway). The urinal stayed. Pauline had it tiled and added plants around it. The cats still consider it a favorite spot.
As you can see from the ceiling, anything left appears to stay. It's dusty up there.
Capt. Tony was a former mayor of Key West. There were lots of articles and pictures with famous people all around.
Just hanging out with drinkers.
Dusty bras, T-shirts and a pink flamingo.
Me with the pirate.

The boys under the bras.
I spotted the Associated Press sign and decided to leave my mark there. No, I was not giving up my bra.
Josh enjoyed the Pirate Punch. (It was actually better than the beer)
The boys decide to climb a mangrove along the road. That's Josh's foot.
Josh's successful climb.
Sam begins his ascent.
Sam disappears into the mangrove as Josh looks on.
Sam has arrived.
Smile!
The descent. Check out the legs on that mangrove.
The USS Vandenberg was scheduled to be sunk off the coast and turned into an artificial reef. Turns out it was part of the ghost fleet from Virginia. Sadly, the sinking was scheduled for after our departure. It would have been cool to watch. But here's the sinking: http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iy4pXyqcS5Pg7dtwlA40_zr3pPaAD98ER4CO3
The neighborhood near Harry Truman's Little White House. Apparently he spent some time in Key West and they made a presidential library out of it. We didn't make it in.
The Vandenberg from Virginia and Boston Brick...we couldn't escape where we were all from. There were also a million things from N.C., so Sam joined us in that whole can't escape stuff.
Sam, on the phone with the family awaiting their looking him up on the world wide web. Also, Sloppy Joe's is the bar Hemingway frequented. This is the one that replaced the original.
We all loved seeing the chickens in town. This was some great art. More about the chickens later.
